Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been the talking point of almost every industry in the last few months. Fashion especially has been deeply impacted by the possibilities of using AI across creative, business and operational areas.

Since sustainability is one of the fashion industry’s biggest challenges, using AI to tackle sustainability objectives has been a topic of constant debate. From smart designs, reducing waste through smart management of inventory in production and better predictive understanding of customer behavior are some of the more obvious applications.
Here are a few ideas on some new ways AI could work for sustainability:
1. Eliminate waste in photoshoots through virtual modelling
All garments used in photo shoots are discarded and find their way to the dumpster. Instead, using AI to create virtual models of the clothes for every catalogue and even fashion shows (through 3D holograms) would reduce the amount of clothes wasted.
2. Set design parameters through purchasing behaviour
AI has the ability to parse through millions of data points to find specific aspects of designs that customers like. Bringing the right elements together into a single set of designs is in its nascent stages, but this could help create new designs and trends that are more buyable and therefore reduce the waste in unsold inventory.
3. Weave new designs and patterns
AI can bring together technical data in various permutations and combinations in excess of a team of talented designers, to create new fabrics that use less material yet provide better finish, look and feel. This would reduce fabric consumption and ease the entire demand pressure on fibres both natural and artificial
